Use of fireworks

Tue, 07/08/2014 - 5:30pm

    Dear Editor:

I am writing to protest the indiscriminate use of fireworks over the Fourth of July 4 weekend.

While it may be someone's right under the law with local approval, the lack of consideration is absolutely appalling. Why must we endure the destruction of peace and quiet by the significant aerial blasts in the middle of forests at night, which seriously distress pets and other animals, the elderly and ill people, never mind that they can be incredibly dangerous, and a fire hazard.

If someone wishes or needs to blast on their property during construction, significant notice is required to neighbors as well as clearance by the town. How is it that amateurs can go ahead and blast away with their fireworks? Are professional firework displays not enough?

I sincerely hope that the town of Boothbay will reconsider its currently cavalier position on this activity and limit it to the professionals.
