Updated: Chief Deputy Rand Maker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement Friday afternoon, on the morning’s fatal accident just over the Dresden line from Wiscasset:

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash on Route 27 in Dresden near its border with Wiscasset.  Deputies initially responded to the area at about 9:22 a.m. after the Lincoln County Communication Center received a report of a “head on crash.”

An initial investigation has determined a 1995 Toyota Camry was operating north on Route 27 when a southbound 2010 Chevrolet Malibu crossed into the northbound travel lane and struck the Camry in the northbound lane.  First responders arriving at the scene determined the female driver of the Camry was deceased.  A male passenger in the Camry and the driver of the Malibu were both transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta by Gardiner Rescue with what are believed to be serious injuries.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is reconstructing this crash and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is providing forensic mapping. A blood sample has been obtained from the driver of the Malibu as is required in all fatal crash investigations.

The investigation has not determined why the Malibu entered the wrong lane or if speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor in the crash.  It does appear both drivers were wearing seat belts.  Investigators have not determined if the passenger in the Camry was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Lincoln County deputies were assisted at the scene by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Wiscasset Police Department, the Wiscasset District Attorney’s Office, the Dresden and Wiscasset fire departments, Wiscasset Ambulance Service, and Gardiner Rescue.

The names of all those involved have not been released pending the notification of family.  Both the north and southbound lanes of Route 27 were closed during the initial investigation for over three hours. Route 27 in Dresden is now open for normal traffic.

Deputies will continue their investigation with a final report being forwarded to the Wiscasset District Attorney’s Office for review.

Original post: One person has died and two others were seriously injured Friday morning in a head-on crash on Route 27, just over the Dresden line from Wiscasset, Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry confirmed.

Both of the injured – one from the same vehicle as the person who died, the other from the other vehicle involved – were taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta, Merry said in a phone interview.

That area of Route 27 remained shut down in both directions and he did not know when it might reopen, Merry said at about 11 a.m. The accident was reported at about 9:30 a.m., he said. Other responding departments were Wiscasset police, Dresden Fire Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Wiscasset and Gardiner ambulance services, Merry said.

The Wiscasset Newspaper was continuing to seek information.
