Two Salty Dogs vying for top store again

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 12:00pm

Two Salty Dogs in Boothbay Harbor, the store that has twice won Downeast Dog News's reader poll for “Best Pet Store in Maine,” needs your help to capture the title for the third year in a row.

“We won the first year we were open, which was a very pleasant surprise,” owner Don Kingsbury said. “Last year we won again, which means we must be doing something right.”

Kingsbury, along with his wife Liana and the couple's four black Labs, came to Boothbay Harbor because it is a very pet friendly town — but had no pet store. Products must pass quality inspection by the Labs Coal, Auggie, Max and newest rescue, Buddy, for them to be carried in the store. The Kingsburys also take quality very seriously in their products, preferring products made right here in Maine whenever possible.

Two Salty Dogs is also well-known as a big supporter of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. They created and sponsor the annual Mutt Scrub to benefit LCAS, which includes a doggie talent show and doggie musical chairs. This is the third summer it will be taking place.

All ballots need to be in by April 30, and this year, you can vote either by mail using original paper ballots (available at Two Salty Dogs, 22 McKown Street in Boothbay Harbor or online at downeastdognews.villagesoup.com — just follow the big green box to vote).

Once you've voted, take a stroll over to www.twosaltydogs.net to check out Max and Auggie’s dog blog, sign up for “The Salty Paws” newsletter, and look at all the photos of happy animals playing with toys sold at the store.

If you buy a toy and submit a picture of your cat or dog playing with it, it will probably appear on the website! Also, you can now do all your shopping online, so even if you only visit us in the summer or live in the Boothbay region part of the year, you can still support Maine Best Pet Store — three years in a row, if you help us out.
