Letter to the Editor

Two class acts

    Dear Editor:

In the past month, Bay Landing lost two of its finest: Barbara Fossett and Barbara Foley. Some may remember the Register’s article some time ago chronicling Barbara Fossett’s illustrious carer as a Boothbay Harbor Public Servant, which was touched upon in her obituary. Here was no ordinary lady. Those at Bay Landing will remember fondly her affectionate fun-loving spirit and helpfulness in all occasions.

Barbara Foley’s contributions were less public but no less considerable. For years, she was Bay Landing’s “hostess with the mostest.” Whenever there was a speaker, a holiday, a birthday to be celebrated or a food sale to be planned, Barbara was in charge of much of the effort, and the expensive was gladly borne by her. She tirelessly recruited any of her willing neighbors to assist.

This was done with class and style: china teacups, linens and floral arrangements ordered from the green house. Her efforts were much appreciated and enjoyed by all. After such affairs Barbara even made sure that those who could not attend received little offerings of goodies. Often those of us who she felt might be under some financial burden would find a $20 bill pressed into our hands. The pleasure of giving was the only reward she sought from any of this.

Both of these ladies were in their own ways, “class acts.” I can only hope that their torches will be passed and picked up the the next generation of seniors, knowing full well that the original bearers will be long remembered and sorely missed.
