Twenty two participants have just completed a six-month medically-based fitness and wellness program sponsored by Boothbay Region Health Care, Inc (BRHC). The “Fit, Flexible and Strong” program began last October. The last classes and graduation took place on May 31.

Last October, the BRHC medical team, including Juliette Cohen, RN, BSN, under the direction of Dr. Allan “Chip” Teel, completed an initial evaluation of each participant with a basic health history and a medical screening. Wellness Coach Mary Baudo evaluated each participant’s fitness, strength and flexibility. With the combined health and fitness information, each participant received an exercise program that was tailored specifically for them. Participants were encouraged to keep a log of both their daily nutrition and exercise activities. Activity could include free walking for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the YMCA, walking on Land Trust trails, taking exercises classes at various locations throughout the region and, as an added benefit, participants were able to take classes twice a week at the Community Center with Baudo.

Baudo’s classes included exercises that could be done at home, nutrition advice and other information on living a healthy lifestyle. The program was not just an exercise class. The goal was to help participants make changes that lead to improved health and wellness.

Participant Dave Tew said, “The most useful part for me, besides all the fun we had in the class, is that now I know what exercises will help me most and why. Before, I was just guessing.”

Jackie Pinard had a long recovery ahead of her after spending much of 2015 in the hospital. Seeing the article in the Register announcing the Fit, Flexible and Strong program, she signed up hoping it would help to get her started. She remarked, “It’s amazing how much stronger I am. I built up enough strength and stamina that I was able to lug firewood and shovel this past winter. It’s so good to feel that success. I plan to do the program again when it’s offered.”

Many found the classes very helpful and motivating. Joyce Armendaris commented, “A structured class makes all the difference. Mary is an expert in her field.” During the initial evaluation, blood pressure, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, pulse, as well as cognitive and edema assessments were performed. Many were nervous about having the assessments performed due to their health concerns. At the second assessment, three months into the program, the participants were amazingly changed in outlook, attitude, and health status. They were eager to see how they had improved. At the conclusion of the six-month program, final assessments documented the improvements the participants achieved in flexibility, strength and balance, along with easier breathing, better blood sugar, better heart health, and better nutritional habits.

As an incentive to those who stuck with the program for the full six months, there was a cash rebate of part of the registration fee. BRHC board members are so pleased with the positive results and feedback from participants that they plan to offer the program again in the fall of 2017.
