“Viceroy House” -  Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) is sent to New Delhi to end the British Raj in India (1947). Mountbatten is sympathetic to the Indians, but his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson) is more politically savvy and empathetic than he is. “We came here to transfer power … not to create violence,” she says of the killings and riots that surrounded them. While upstairs Mountbatten consults with Nehru and Gandhi on how to divide the country in two, downstairs a Hindu-Muslim romance echoes the political problems of a country besieged with cultural and religious differences.

Directed by Gurinder Chadha, the granddaughter of one of the 14 million who were transplanted during the partition, the film is a commentary on a pivotal historic moment that changed the modern world. "Viceroy's House" is rated PG13 and plays Wednesday, Oct. 18  at 7 p.m.

“Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” (1939) - Frank Capra's classic comedy-drama established James Stewart as a lead actor in one of his finest (and most archetypal) roles. When the idealistic young Jefferson Smith  winds up appointed to the United States Senate, he gains the mentorship of Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains). However, Paine isn't as noble as his reputation would indicate, and he becomes involved in a scheme to discredit Smith, who wants to build a boys' campsite where a more lucrative project could go. Determined to stand up against Paine and his corrupt peers, Smith takes his case to the  Senate floor.  This is one of the theater’s new matinees on Thursdays and Fridays at 2 p.m., this week Oct. 19 and 20. All matinee tickets are $6.

“Trip To Spain” -  After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, they head to Spain to sample the best of the country's gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity  impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.

"The scenery is strikingly beautiful and the food will make your mouth water." ~ Bruce Demara, Toronto Star. “Trip To Spain” plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, Saturday, Oct. 21 and Wednesday, Oct. 25; plays at 2 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Special children’s Halloween movie - all tickets $6 - coming at 10 a.m. on Oct. 28: Steven Spielberg’s  “Casper the Friendly Ghost,” (1995) -  the tale of a young girl who inherits a house in Maine inhabited by three mischievous ghosts and one friendly one. Starring Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman and Cathy Moriarty. Rated PG. All children must be accompanied by an adult.  Halloween treats for children will be handed out after the show!

The new, non-profit Harbor Theater shows first-run movies (Friday - Sunday and Wednesday), independent films, documentaries and classics. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Ticket prices reduced - $10/adults and $8/children up to age 18).
