At the theaters: ‘Still Alice,’ ‘Selma,’ ‘Downton Abbey,’ more

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision.

With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone.

The movie depicting her journey, “Wild,” powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

Stars Oscar winner (“Walk the Line”) Reese Witherspoon, who received an Oscar nomination for her role as Strayed, and Laura Dern as Strayed's mother.

The film plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 and Thursday, Feb. 26.

“Still Alice’  ” Dr. Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a renowned linguistics professor at Columbia University. When words begin to escape her and she starts becoming lost on her daily jogs, Alice must come face-to-face with a devastating diagnosis: early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

As the once-vibrant woman struggles to hang on to her sense of self for as long as possible, Alice's three grown children must watch helplessly as their mother disappears more and more with each passing day.

Moore was awarded an Oscar for this performance at the 87th Academy Awards ceremony (as well as a Golden Globe and SAG awards). The film costars Alec Baldwin as her husband and Kristen Stewart as the couple’s daughter.

Lincoln Theater

“Selma” tells the chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. “Glory,” from the film's soundtrack, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song on Feb. 22.

“Selma” stars David Oyelowo as King, Oprah Winfrey, Carmen Ejogo and Tim Roth.

Final screenings Wednesday, Feb. 25 and Thursday, Feb. 26 at 2 and 7 p.m.

Downton in Damariscotta: Season 5 of the highest-rated drama in PBS history, “Downton Abbey,” has played on Fridays, beginning in January. The final episode of the season will screen at 2 p.m. on Feb. 27.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” LCCT presents this, the last of the “top three” Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, on Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 7 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
