Dear Editor:

On July 25 and 26, the Lady Seahawks basketball program hosted the 4th annual Boothbay Lobster Jam. Teams competing included Boothbay, Cheverus, Foxcroft Academy, Freeport, George Stevens Academy, Hermon, Kennebunk, Leavitt, Lincoln Academy, Lisbon, Newfound Regional (NH), Oak Hill, Oxford Hills, South Portland, Spruce Mountain and Thornton Academy.

The field was divided into four pools with each team playing three games. The four pool winners squared off in a single elimination “Final Four” bracket. The “Final Four” included Cheverus, Lincoln Academy, South Portland, and Spruce Mountain. In the championship game, Lincoln Academy edged South Portland, 63 to 58 in an overtime thriller to become the Lobster Jam champs!

Lincoln Academy’s Brie Wajer was named the tourney MVP. The sophomore point guard proved to be a true floor general throughout the tourney, and took over when she needed to as she went for 21 points in the championship game. Wajer was also the winner of the tourney’s Skills Competition relay, finishing with a time of 25.02 seconds, a new course record.

The event was a smash hit with players, coaches and fans. Many thanks go out to the parents and students who helped organize and volunteered their time for the weekend. The Lobster Jam is a huge fundraiser for the Lady Seahawks program. We received many contributions from local businesses and townspeople and would like to thank the following: Andrews' Harborside, Coastal Maine Popcorn, Dragonfly Designs, Grover’s Hardware, Hannaford’s, The Lobster Dock, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Eddie Tibbetts and the lobstermen of Atlantic Edge, Dave Bean and the lobstermen of Bristol Lobster, Hugh Thompson and the lobstermen of Robinson’s Wharf, Douglas Carter and the lobstermen of Sea Pier, P.T.A., Booster’s, the BRYMCA and Channel 7. Special thanks go out to Eric Dunton for setting up both gyms and being on call all day.
