‘Taxation’ letter missing facts

    Dear Editor:
Jarryl Larson's letter (Taxation without representation: The new America) on voter ID laws, posted on April 18, 2016, caused me to look into the accuracy of several of the points made in her letter.

Per the state of Wisconsin website, bringit.wi.gov, proof of identity, a photo ID, is required prior to voting in that state. Approved photo IDs include but are not limited to: a U.S. passport, a Veterans Administration issued ID card, a WI drivers license and a WI issued photo ID. A complete list of approved IDs is on the website.

To obtain WI issued photo ID, documents such as a certified birth certificate, Social Security card and utility/cell phone bills are acceptable forms of proof of identity/citizenship/residency. A complete list these documents is on the website.

Larson's statement on the non-acceptance of Veteran IDs and drivers licenses as proof of identity by Wisconsin election officials is not accurate.
I do believe that some voters in those states with voter ID laws will find it difficult to initially comply with the law. Those states need to make every effort not to exclude their legal citizens seeking to vote.

With regards to Larson's comments on some states not accepting absentee ballots by mail, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) website, NCSL.org, states the following: "Absentee Voting: All states will mail an absentee ballot to certain voters who request one. The voter may return the ballot by mail or in person. In 20 states, an excuse is required, while 27 states and the District of Columbia permit any qualified voter to vote absentee without offering an excuse."

Based on the NCSL, all 50 states accept absentee ballots by mail vs. Larson's statement there are some unidentified states that do not.

Larson writes many thought provoking letters to the Register. However, in this case the lack of fact checking has resulted in the loss of credibility in making her points.
