Tanner and his teams

    Dear Editor:

I would like to comment on Tanner Grover’s recent letter in the Register announcing that he would be stepping down as the girls’ varsity basketball coach. I was struck by Tanner’s thoughtfulness as well as the articulate manner in which those thoughts were expressed. Impressive! And while Tanner extended his thanks to his players, coaches, parents, and fans, it strikes me that we should be thanking Tanner for a job well done.

As a former college and high school coach, I have a deep appreciation for the challenges that coaches face. Indeed, I am not sure if even the players can fully appreciate the time, patience, stamina, and emotional energy that is required of a coach as he or she attempts to enable a team to be the best it can be. The challenges and the distractions one faces, both on and off the court can, at times, seem overwhelming. From where I sat, Tanner handled it all with grace.

I was always impressed with Tanner’s squads. They played as a team, were fundamentally sound, and shared a contagious enthusiasm for the game. They were truly a joy to watch. Further, Tanner and his coaching staff seemed always to be in control of their emotions, setting a positive example for both their players and spectators. Yes, Tanner had great girls to work with, but in this era of “What’s in it for me?” and behind the scene spectating “experts,” he was able to get everyone on the same page pulling in the same direction. Not an easy task!

So, congratulations Tanner for your remarkable success as the varsity girls’ basketball coach. Not only did your teams achieve success on the court, they were also outstanding representatives of the Boothbay region. During your tenure, your teams have warmed our winters here on the peninsula and you have left in indelible positive mark on those you have coached.
