Support runner, cause at Y April 26

    Dear Editor:

Thank you for your nice article of April 7 about Hunter de Garmo's 50K run (31 miles!), called "Stride," for Parkinson's disease, which will happen this Tuesday, April 26! I want to encourage everyone to come to the Y this Tuesday anytime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to support this event.

For several reasons, this event is close to my own heart. I've seen my own father (one a marathon runner himself) touched by Parkinson's disease, just as Hunter has seen his mother, Barbara, diagnosed. I'm so impressed and inspired by Hunter's attempt to run this distance and run for this cause (and on our Y's indoor track!). I've been lucky to witness some of Hunter's faithful training, putting in the many miles necessary for such an attempt. I've also seen Hunter more slowly often walking with his mother, into the track, by her side, for the Y's senior walking hours.

I encourage everyone who can, please come to the Y Tuesday to support Hunter and this cause. Donations are optional, but suggested at $10, one hundred percent going to the Maine Parkinson's Society. Hunter has organized information tables and invited local Parkinson's support groups. When you come, you can register, receive a certificate showing your support, run and/or walk alongside Hunter or just come to cheer!
