Stevens' stories
Dear Editor:
Reading my Uncle Jim Stevens memories of the depression years in East Boothbay, (May 16, Boothbay Register), I am reminded of the many stories my father told.
During the depth of the Depression, jobs were so scarce that able-bodied men from Goudy & Stevens shipyard were roofing barns. Any paying job was welcome. When there were no paying jobs, my grandfather, Art Stevens, took a personal loan from the bank in order to pay his crew. This was a source of enormous pride to my father whom some may remember as “Tunk” Stevens.
