St. Andrews Village: Enjoying March music

Sat, 03/29/2014 - 7:00am

Two mornings a week, there’s a contract bridge session in the Peggy Pinkham Dining Room. Any bridge player is welcome. Jane Larsen of Boothbay Harbor is in charge here. A few Boothbay residents come to help out, and to enjoy themselves at the same time.

On certain afternoons, Scrabble or cribbage is offered. Almost monthly on Fridays, Independent Living residents play bingo! (“Bring your quarters!” is the reminder.)

Correct me if I’m wrong: Assisted Living people have their own weekly bingo game, as do residents of the Gregory Wing. Some residents of Safe Havens may join them.

Music is available to everyone, as musicians often start at one end of the Inn (the Gregory Wing, for instance), and continue to Assisted Living, often ending in the Independent Living area. Lefty brings his keyboard and saxophone and sings along with the keyboard’s magic chords. Randy Lindsey’s mellow voice and guitar accompaniment leave one in a good mood.

Matthew Ryder’s voice, with its suggestion of Broadway, is another entertainment. David Stone at the piano is ready to tell stories of past musicians, songs and composers, always with at least one fascinating item.

The bus carried residents to Damariscotta, to “The Pirates of Penzance,” a Gilbert and Sullivan romp with bad boys and their girlfriends. For their British listeners, some of the joke is in the familiar name of a piece of Cornwall coast (Penzance); translated to the U.S. it’s a little like saying “The Pirates of Boothbay Harbor.” The orchestra was outstanding. Queen Victoria was present for the occasion.

This was sung as a concert and very well done, with the precise diction needed for Gilbert’s songs.

Later in March, the bus carried music lovers to hear the Midcoast Symphony in Topsham. They returned for a slightly late supper, having enjoyed a delightful concert.

The “late” dinner in March took place earlier than usual, because the Nor’Easters barbershoppers came to entertain the diners. They’re always fun to hear. Barbershop alumnus Dan joined them for a few numbers. Listening to this group always puts St. Andrews villagers in a mellow mood.

As this is written, Charlotte is moving from her cottage into an apartment. Welcome!

More apartments are available right now. When calling to find out about them, ask for Steven Goold, R.N., who will be happy to answer questions.
