St. Andrew’s Pipes and Drums at Colonial Pemaquid June 24

Wed, 06/20/2018 - 10:30am

On Sunday, June 24 at 2 p.m., The Friends of Colonial Pemaquid will host the re-scheduled Memorial Day performance of Ellsworth, Maine-based St. Andrew’s Pipes and Drums at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic site in New Harbor. Visitors will enjoy traditional tunes of the British Isles with musicians clad in the official Maine State Tartan plaid performed on the parade grounds of Fort William Henry. The concert, which is in its 12th year, is free to the public. There is no charge for the program, though donations are appreciated.

The Maine St. Andrews Pipes and Drums has performed as a group since 1996, traveling throughout Maine, the United States and Canada, participating in concerts, parades and Highland Games, and providing educational presentations to school groups. The group, which is made up of members who range in age from15-70, brings together an interesting mix of beginner and veteran musicians, some who have an ancestral connection to the instrument’s Scottish beginnings and others who are drawn to the instrument’s haunting sounds.

While on site, visitors are encouraged to experience English Frontier settlement life in the New World during the 17th and 18th centuries by visiting a reconstructed fort with permanent exhibit, archaeological ruins, cemetery, artifact museum, and a recreation of a 17th century thatched roof cottage. Colonial Pemaquid Historic State Site is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day.
