Music from different cultures around the world was featured at Southport Central School’s annual Spring Concert, entitled “Around the World: Ways We are Alike,” on Wednesday evening, June 6 at the Southport Town Hall.

Music teacher Jennifer McIvor had the school’s 25 students in grades kindergarten through 6 perform eight selections with instruments and voices. Three of the selections were prefaced by poems written and read by sixth graders Azalea Bennett, Corey Sherman and Andrew Fowlie.

The kindergarten and first grade percussion ensemble began the concert using just Djembe drums with each of the five members of the ensemble drumming out their “conversations.” The fifth and sixth grade guitar ensemble improvised their selection, which was followed by the student body singing and playing ukuleles and recorders to the French song, “Au Clair de la Lune.” A Peruvian song, “El Condor Pasa,” was performed by the guitar ensemble, and the second grade choral ensemble sang an Israeli folk song, “Zum Gali Gali.” The grades 3-6 choral ensemble sang “The Rainforest Song,” followed by “Peace in Twelve Languages,” sung by the K-2 choral ensemble. The 30-minute concert ended with all of the students singing “A Child of Song.”
