Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, Week H

Tue, 08/15/2017 - 3:00pm

People often ask me which week of the summer is hardest as a sailing instructor. My first thought is the week before the kids arrive, repairing the boats and buildings, heavy lifting, and hard work. My runners up seemed to be the middle of the summer when the program was full and there were more people around than I could keep track of on my own. The real hardest week I’ve come to realize, however, is this final week of the sailing program. Return home is imminent, and all of the memory-worthy events from this summer will officially become memories. This summer at SYC has been incredible and will reside in my memories for a long time.

Not all of the news is negative, though. The final week for the program is also the first week for swim testers Lincoln Collier, Grady Conly, Maggie Conly, Skylar Taketa, Tyler Plath, Gerig Wittner, Luc Wittner, Jessica Wojdak, and Peter Wojdak. Whether they are starting sailing this week or taking the swim for next summer, we welcome you all to the program.

The final Ice Cream Social was held last Thursday by the SJYCSF Junior Officers Keiran Lorentzen, Ryan McCann, Jenna Peterson, and Finn Wilson along with the assistance of many afternoon class sailors. The club was bursting with ice cream fans and socialites alike as they shared a common interest. The final event of the year is the Southport Yacht Club banquet on August 18th.

Harraseeket Yacht Club hosted a regatta last week and several SYC sailors took the journey over to represent the club. For Club 420 results, skipper Max Freund and crew Eliza Goodell ended the week in 6th.Dane Phippen and Abby Thress in 7th. Martha Rand and Sara Morrison in 16th with Charlie Apolinsky and Abbie Peterson in 17th. For Optis, Luke Thress was in 11th with Will Moen in 20th, Ella Freund in 24th, Brodie Snyder in 26th, Sawyer Bates in 28th, and Peter Bauman in 31st. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

As Secretary for the Junior Yacht Club, I would like to personally thank anyone who donated to or participated in any of the SJYCSF events this summer, along with all of the sailors and their parents who helped the club and their children. Finally, I would like to thank all who read this article the past seven weeks. “And remember, people, that no matter who you are and what you do to live, thrive and survive, there're still some things that makes us all the same. You. Me. Them. Everybody. Everybody.” --Elwood Blues. Enjoy your off season, the summer of 2018 is closer than it feels like.
