Southport Column: Upcoming events, ‘Ruth’s House’ and more

We are almost there ... as Mollie Moore told me ... “just another week and we switch to daylight saving and then three more weeks and it will be spring.” Plue ... check out the yellow witch hazel blooming in the Southport Memorial Library garden. Now that all sounds good despite the chilly days and snow piles and even many icy spots that remain.

There is always lots to do.

The Southport Island Association welcomes everyone to enjoy their Annual “Ice Breaker” party which will be held at the Southport Town Hall on Sunday, March 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. Please bring a food nibble to share and enjoy greeting neighbors as we celebrate the thaw! If needed, a snow makeup date will be scheduled for March 18.

Keep your date book. Leigh has covered the several important political events coming up, however, here are the dates again. The Southport Democratic Caucus will be held Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at Boothbay Region High School. You can still pre-register at my.mainedems.org/caucus/pre-reg through March 2. Even without registering you can still particpate in the caucus.

Then the annual Southport Town Meeting will be held on Monday, March 5. Voting for the town officers will take place at the Southport Town Hall during the day from 10 a.m.to 5:30 p.m. with the voting on additional articles beginning at 7:30 p.m. You can read the warrant online at townofsouthport.org. The Southport Central School will offer refreshments at the meeting.

Perhaps you have seen the “Sale Pending” sign on the Gardner property on Beach Road. Yes ... the Land for Southport's Future has an agreement to purchase the property, which is pretty exciting news. Nancy Prisk, who has passionately stayed with this project for several years, has, along with the board, indicated that the time frame for the actual “use” of this property (to be called Ruth's House) is dependent on when we are “granted the deed” from the town of Southport. What that means is that the board is diligently working on the gifts and donations to make this happen. We can all share and preserve this unique piece of coastal Southport ... an inspiration for the community to engage in art, science and environmental educational opportunities, with creative fellowship for children and adults. Please contact LFSF @landforsouthportsfuture.org or check the website for details https:/landforsouthportsfuture.org. You can always phone 207-217 -7743 for more information.

Checking in at Robinson's Wharf ... they hope to be open March 14 for lunch and dinner — the days still to be decided.

What was all the commotion outside the Southport General Store last week? It was “Lucy,” the resident hen from just across the street had returned for crumbs and any “found treats.” The staff cheered, ”It must be spring...Lucy is back!”

One more note: When you are at the General Store, check the board ... “The Skip of the Day”... more fun awaits!
