Southport Column: Oliver’s liquor license a surprise

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 1:00pm

Note to all: the Southport Island Store will be closed on Easter Sunday. Plan accordingly.

“Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink” is a quote from the poem, “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” often quoted by thirsty people on boats, or on Southport Island this spring. The Boothbay Region Water District (BBRWD) is working hard to get meters installed so that homeowners can turn on their summer water. A few homeowners may already have their meters installed. Most important is a meeting beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 at the Southport Town Hall for citizens to talk with BBRWD representatives who will explain the Interconnection and Tank Replacement Project and listen to citizens’ ideas and questions. Daily updated information about the turn on process and more information about the meeting can be found at the BBRWD website, www.bbrwd.org.

In the category of upsetting, non-violent crimes is the theft of Frannie Johnson commemorative lobster buoys off her fence last Saturday night. Each one was collected from the local lobsterman who has died, including one from her grandson Joel, who drowned in the Sheepscot River 15 years ago. Whoever thinks these thefts are funny or fun, please know that the theft of street signs costs your town money, and theft of articles such as the lobster buoys cost homeowners heartache. Be a real sport and bring them back.

The Southport United Methodist Church members will join with the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church and the East Boothbay Methodist Church for services during Easter week. On Thursday, April 17 in honor of Maundy Thursday, the East Boothbay Methodist Church hosts a service and supper beginning at 5:30 p. m. On Good Friday, April 18 at St. Columba’s Church on Emery Lane there will be services from noon until 3 p.m. with the ecumenical service at 2 p.m., and later that day at the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. you can experience the somber Tenebrae service. Easter Sunday observances will begin with the sunrise service at 5:30 a.m. by the Stone Cottage on Bayberry Lane, Newagen, with at breakfast at the Southport church following. (Expect the sun to rise at 6:09 a.m.) At 9 a.m. the Southport United Methodist Church will celebrate Easter. Happy Easter, everyone.

The news that Oliver’s in Cozy Harbor will open with a full bar came as a surprise to many of us. If my memory serves me well, the town first voted to have no liquor served at Oliver’s. Then we voted to allow beer and wine, at least partially persuaded by the information that people were surreptitiously bringing wine to the restaurant anyway. To my knowledge there was no vote authorizing a full bar, although I am sure Mr. Coloumbe has applied to the state and received a liquor license.

Sandra Thibault and granddaughter Molly had a great time participating in a fashion show at Christopher and Banks in Augusta recently. They received a lovely bouquet of flowers and enjoyed a good lunch as part of the experience.

As a correction please note that the Thibaults recently celebrated a 53rd wedding anniversary not a 43 as recently reported.

Finally the Southport columnists for the next three weeks will be Maria Doelp for April 21 and May 5. You can contact her at pdoelp@roadrunner.com. For April 28 the columnist will be Sandra Seifert, who can be reached at seifert@roadrunner.com. Thanks to both Maria and Sandra for keeping the news flowing.
