Southport Column: Island happenings

Wed, 04/23/2014 - 7:00am

Here is this sometime columnist, challenged to find some news!

The “feel” of spring is just about here with a few bulbs appearing. I saw some crocuses and even some daffodils.

You will be pleased to know you can now access your mail from the Southport post office 24 hours a day. The lobby will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new hours of operation for the window are now Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., then 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Saturday window hours are now 9 a.m to 11:15 a.m. Jeanette will take lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Jeanette now has a longer “commute” as she and her family have moved to a five-acre farm in Waldoboro, but she will still be our “faithful postal girl.”

Just after taking on the leadership of the Y Board, Wells Moore puts on his new “Captain” hat and was off to Florida to begin his journey on the boat that he and Mollie will enjoy in Maine.

Wells and his brother John (along with the former owner and designer) left this week and will make their way to Savannah, and then were on their own for the rest of the trip. Now, I know you want to know what kind of boat: it is a Great Harbor 37 trawler. Watch for Flying Gorgi (don't you love the name) this summer on a mooring at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

Just in case you wondered, Mollie enjoyed having Karen Brower, who flew in from Florida to be with her for a week. Frank and Karen Brower (plus dogs, cat) will arrive on Pratts Island later in May. The rest of the month Mollie has long-time friend, Barbara Wollison, visiting from Virginia to enjoy Maine and help walk their corgi “Morgan.”

Head to the Southport Memorial Library; it is a busy place on Tuesday mornings. The story hour with Kathy Barter was underway with about 10 to 12 little ones (even a one week old, Wyatt, with his brother William, holding the hand of happy grandmother, Jan Hamblen).

School vacation week brought “story-hour graduate” Ella Beauregard to help.

Linda Brewer (our noted librarian) noted that Mary Miller brought about six high school students, including the exchange student from Spain, to do a total library clean-up, breaking down boxes, even finding a book Linda was looking for a year.

Observations of island “happenings”: Newagen residents are aware of the flags/markers on the property that will incorporate the pipes to be placed/buried for the sewer and water intended for the Cuckolds Lighthouse Inn.

Newagen Inn is coordinating the reservations for staying at the Inn, which as Jeremy at Newagen tells me opens mid-June with several reservations already in place. He also mentioned that the Newagen Dining room will open May 25.

Southport Gift Barn (you knew I would have to mention that) has a new look, floor painted and some changes. Wait till you see the new items. Opening day will be May 22! Exciting, right!
