Soccer team ends season strong

The Boothbay Region High School girls soccer season officially ended on Monday, Oct. 16, with a 3-1 win over Telstar. Unfortunately, this season ending boost was not enough to get the Seahawks into the post-season playoffs.

Coach Ben Powell provided the following report on the final game:

“The Seahawks finished their season strong with a nice win against Telstar 3-1. Boothbay controlled possession for the majority of the game and had contributions from everyone on the field.

There were a few really good chances in the first half, but we could not find the back of the net. At halftime the score was 0-0 and in order to get some more offense, Hannah was moved up to forward (from goal). Since we were without Jackie (McLoon), Maddie G (Gaudette) volunteered to play goalie despite never having played there before. She took a few warmup shots from me during halftime and was ready to go.

After the first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half, the tie was broken on a great give and go between the Cola sisters with Reagan finishing in the side netting. Reagan got her second goal quickly after taking it by several defenders and then shooting one off the side of the post. With 2 minutes left in the game there was an unintentional hand ball in the box that was called against Boothbay giving Telstar a penalty kick. Maddie did a great job in the second half but was unable to come up with the save on the penalty.

On the ensuing kickoff, Reagan went coast to coast right through their entire team and scored, giving her a hat trick for the game, and her second of the year. The whole play took about 10 seconds.

The Seahawks finish the season with a 4-10 record. This is actually the same record as last year, but unfortunately this year it will not get us into the playoffs. I still think the season was a success, we had a lot of inexperienced players who improved dramatically throughout the year. Our seniors were great all year and they will be missed.”
