Seniors Walk Free at the Y program off to a rousing start

Thu, 03/27/2014 - 10:30am

On Tuesday, March 18, thirty eager seniors turned up at the YMCA between 10 a.m. and noon for the first day of the “Seniors Walk for Free at the Y” program. Most returned on Thursday morning and three more people joined in.

Our senior walkers range in age from 65 to 88. Some walked slowly. A few used the railing. But most people walked at least 2 laps (1/4 mile). Many walked 4 to 8 laps (1/2 mile to 1 mile). The most ambitious walker polished off 24 laps (3 miles) both days.

One lady, who used her walker and took many rest stops, completed 8 laps/1 mile both days. She was thrilled! Some people walked solo; others, in twos and threes. There was plenty of room for all, including the regular Y members who come to jog every day.

Camaraderie was high as many people greeted and caught up with acquaintances they hadn’t seen all winter. Comments ranged from: “What a great idea! Why didn’t you do this sooner!” "I haven’t been able to exercise all winter! Now I can get in shape for spring!” “I am so happy this program is happening! This is great!" "I’ve never set foot in the Y before." "I used to be a member, but I can't afford it anymore; I'm so grateful they're doing this, it means a lot to me!" and “I already feel so much better!”

YMCA Board President, Peggy Pinkham said, “What a great collaborative effort that encourages the Region’s ‘mature’ citizens to enjoy some exercise and fellowship.”

It was a wonderful kickoff for the pilot program, which is jointly sponsored by the YMCA’s Active Older Adults program and the Boothbay Region Health & Wellness Foundation. We are hoping to keep the program going as long as seniors show up to walk each week.

Both the Wellness Foundation and the YMCA want to be sure that our senior residents stay fit and active throughout the year, regardless of the weather. Y Executive Director Andy Hamblett commented on the first week’s kickoff: “It’s great to see so many people using this opportunity to exercise and socialize ... building relationships and a support network.”

So, join us between 10 a.m. and noon every Tuesday and Thursday at the Boothbay Region YMCA Track. Anyone who lives on the Boothbay peninsula, and is 65 or over, who would like to walk may do so. You don’t need to be a member of the YMCA to join this program.

Doris Welch, the head of YMCA’s Active Older Adults program, said she was amazed and pleased with the turnout. “Once these seniors get used to coming to walk every week, we’ll be able to show them all the other programs the Y has to offer for active seniors.”

Hamblett added: “People should also remember that the Y provides financial support through ‘Membership for All’ and its Financial Assistance Program. The Y’s goal is to be available for all and never turn anyone away for an inability to pay.”

Walking on an indoor track is a good way to ensure that you have a safe way to exercise. You’re welcome to use a walker or to walk with a cane. There is a railing all the way around the 1/8th mile track, as well as places to sit and rest halfway around. Please bring a clean pair of walking shoes to put on when you arrive. You might also want to bring a bottle of water.

Come on your own. Or pair up with a friend who drives so you can car pool. If you don’t have access to a ride, please call Doris Welch, at the YMCA at 207-633-2855 before noon on Monday and/or Wednesday and leave your name, phone number and address. One of the Wellness Foundation volunteers will call you to arrange your transportation. This program is free. Everyone over 65 is welcome!
