Selectmen discuss ‘Spirit of America’ award

Wed, 09/25/2013 - 10:00am

After the extended executive session of the Boothbay Harbor selectmen on September 23, Bruce Flaherty from the Spirit of America Foundation spoke with the selectmen about honoring a member of the Boothbay Harbor community.

Flaherty explained that the Spirit of America Foundation is a public charity interested in awarding local volunteers and public organizations for “commendable community service.”

The awards are most often awarded by the board of selectmen in towns. Over 86 towns in Maine so far this year have given these awards. Winners so far this year include Linwood Bailey of Alna, David Probert of Dresden, the Community Energy Fund in Newcastle and Judith Maldovan of Whitefield.

These awards are given at no cost to the town.

The board of selectmen decided to look over the proposal and discuss the award at their next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Oct. 14 at the Boothbay Harbor town office.

Anyone interested in discussing possible candidates should attend this meeting or email Board Chairman Bill Hamblen at whamblen@alumni.bowdoin.edu.
