Seahawks lose heartbreaker in overtime

Thu, 09/21/2017 - 1:30pm

Sudden death overtime is probably the most anxiety-provoking of any sport’s offerings, with every play a potential victory or defeat. Coach Ben Powell reports the Boothbay Region High School girls soccer team’s loss in overtime to Winthrop on Wednesday, Sept. 20 was even harder to bear as it came on a questionable call that led to a penalty kick. Winthrop defeated Boothbay 2-1.

Coach Powell reports:

“The Seahawks lost a heartbreaker on an overtime penalty kick to Winthrop. The team started the game strong with a great goal from Reagan Cola from about 25 yards out that she snuck underneath the crossbar. Winthrop countered quickly with a goal created by some bad defensive approaches. However, their goal scorer deserves a ton of credit, as she was one of the better players we’ve seen so far this year.

“The game went into the half tied 1-1, and Boothbay was able to keep the game scoreless despite a few very close calls. The defense and goalie Jackie McLoon played a solid second half to force overtime. In the first minute of overtime, a penalty kick was awarded to Winthrop on an incredibly questionable call. It appeared as though the two girls’ legs got tangled and they both went down, but for some reason the officials decided that it was worthy of a penalty kick. Winthrop converted the penalty kick and since overtime is golden goal, the game ended.”

“It was an absolutely brutal way to lose a game. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it now, so we’ll move on and focus on our next game, which looks like it will be Madison a week from today. We have a nice little mid-season break so hopefully we’ll heal up and start the second half strong.”

The Seahawks next face Madison at Madison on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
