Seahawks drop home opener to Lisbon

Tue, 04/24/2018 - 7:45am

Seahawks baseball coach Ed Crocker found reason to be encouraged with the team’s home opener against Lisbon High School following a 43-1 drubbing at the hands of Dirigo High School on Friday, April 20.

“It was devastating,” said Crocker about the opening loss in which pitching gave up 35 walks.

On Monday, April 23, Crocker’s starting lineup consisted of players who had been on vacation the previous week.

Pitcher Steve Reny got off to a shaky start giving up several walks that led to uncontested stolen bases. He was relieved after one out in the first inning by Cameron Crocker. Lisbon kept up the attack and was able to score eight runs before the fire was put out.

Hunter Crocker came on to pitch in the third and limited the Greyhounds to six runs in the three remaining innings in spite of several fielding errors by the Seahawks.

“He had a low pitch count. He threw well,” said Coach Crocker following the game.

The Seahawks had a couple of good scoring chances including in the second. With runners on second and third, Cameron Crocker hit a long line drive, unfortunately directly into the glove of the center fielder to end the inning.

The game ended after the fifth inning following the 10-run mercy rule with a score of 18-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.

Coach Crocker said Cameron Crocker would probably start on Wednesday, April 25 at the team’s away matchup against Mountain Valley High School. Crocker only threw 60 pitches against Lisbon.

Eyes were on rookie infielder Josey Smith who pinch hit in the fourth and tagged a runner out  while playing second base for the Seahawks.

With the win, Lisbon went to 1-0. The Seahawks are 0-2 on the young season.
