Seahawk girls basketball season concludes with awards ceremony

The successful 2017-2018 Boothbay Region High School girls basketball season concluded with an awards ceremony held at the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club Monday night, March 12.

Coach Brian Blethen and Assistant Coach Matt Brewer welcomed the parents, grandparents and players to the ceremony and invited them to enjoy the finger food (and ice cream sundaes) provided before the presentations were made.

Blethen began the event by thanking a host of people and organizations, including junior Alexis Davison for the tie he was wearing (emblazoned with the Seahawk insignia), BRHS Athletic Director Allan Crocker, the bus drivers, Boothbay Region TV and specifically BRHS student Tim Norton who provided film work at all the games, the Boothbay Register, parents and grandparents and junior varsity coach and assistant Matt Brewer.

Enjoying the journey and having fun were two of the topics Blethen talked about when reviewing the season. Wearing oil skins to practice, participating in a Zumba class, and attending a team-building event at the Escape Room in Portland were just some of the things the team experienced this past season.

“And we always have music playing,” said Blethen. “I think music helps bring us together.”

The team (20-1) made it to the South C championship game, losing its only game (besides the Mountain Valley Conference championship game) to the Monmouth Mustangs, 51-47. Boothbay defeated the Mustangs during the regular season but lost in the MVC championship game and in the regional final.

“We lost to a good team,” said Blethen. Monmouth (21-1) won its second straight state title with a 56-50 win over previously undefeated Houlton on March 3.

Blethen talked extensively about each player and awarded letters, certificates, insignias and service bars before handing out the usual plaques. Plaques were awarded to: freshman Kylie Brown, Most Improved; senior Page Brown, Coach’s Award; and junior Faith Blethen, Most Valuable.

The first-year head coach praised Kylie Brown’s improvement from a player off the bench to starting in the South C championship game due to illness and injury to starter Faith Blethen. Regarding her sister, Page Brown, Blethen praised her “fantastic” career – scoring 1,395 points (an undetermined final total), her Robin Colcord award as tournament MVP as a sophomore, the MVC awards, a 2018 Miss Maine Basketball finalist, her team leadership and consistent scoring. Blethen’s daughter, Faith, led this year’s team in about every offensive category but scoring (Page Brown) and was named the co-MVP of the MVC this past season (along with Richmond’s Sydney Tilton).

Faith Blethen and Page Brown were named to the MVC first-team all star team, while teammates, senior Sydney Meader and freshman Glory Blethen, were MVC honorable mentions. Page Brown and Meader were named to the MVC all-academic team as well.

Following the presentations, a season highlight film was shown.
