Scott MacMillan & Colin Grant at the CCAC

Lively Celtic music – Cape Breton style
Posted:  Wednesday, February 1, 2017 - 10:00am

The celebration of Maine Celtic music series continues with exemplary guitarist Scott MacMillan and fiddler extraordinaire Colin Grant Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The duo is teaming up to bring us some new songs from their soon-to-be released recording. MacMillan and Grant are lively ambassadors for the sound of Cape Breton music.

An active music director and arranger, as well as a producer, composer and conductor, MacMillan is renowned as an ambassador for the Cape Breton sound. At home with the Celtic traditions of Nova Scotia as he is with contemporary jazz, blues or avant-garde, MacMillan has been around the world, on stages from Carnegie Hall in New York to conducting full symphony orchestras across Canada. He has composed for film, television and radio, and is a member of the Canadian League of Composers. He works regularly with Symphony Nova Scotia, and has conducted with other major orchestras as part of his work with Atlantic coast artists. In 2001 Mr. Macmillan created a new work for orchestra, bagpipes and tin whistles entitled MacKinnon's Brook Suite, capturing the immigrant story of Scottish settlers to Cape Breton.

Grant is described as hard-driving but clean, lively and passionate, traditional yet original. His fiddle playing moved him to the forefront of the East Coast traditional music scene – and people are sitting up and taking notice. His versatility as both a lead and side musician has given him experiences in a variety of traditional styles, in addition to folk, rock and country genres. Besides having received an ECMA nomination for Roots/Traditional Solo Album of the Year for his self-titled debut album, Grant currently performs with contemporary Celtic instrumental group Sprag Session.

This performance is staged in the Curtis Room (seating is limited) of the Chocolate Church Arts Center Annex located at 804 Washington Street, Bath.
