Safely increasing physical activity is topic for May 25 LincolnHealth diabetes support group

Fri, 05/20/2016 - 3:45pm

LincolnHealth Physical Therapist Tim Bryce will discuss the dangers of neuropathy for people with diabetes and how people with diabetes can increase their physical activity level safely.

The LincolnHealth Diabetes Support Group meets at 1 p.m., usually on the fourth Wednesday of every other month.

Exercise has many benefits for people with diabetes. Exercise can increase insulin sensitivity so cells are better able to use existing insulin. Cells also remove glucose from the blood during exercise using a mechanism that doesn’t involve insulin, lowering blood glucose. Exercising regularly helps improve A1C test results.

At the same time, people with diabetes need to be careful when exercising, particularly if they have not exercised regularly for a period of time and especially when it comes to strenuous exercise. Bryce will discuss how people with diabetes can increase their physical activity safely.

The LincolnHealth Diabetes Support Group meetsin the third floor of the Miles Campus of LincolnHealth to share experiences and send the message that no one should have to deal with diabetes alone.
