Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce

Rotary hosts Business After Hours

Wed, 08/12/2015 - 1:30pm

The Boothbay Harbor Rotary will host a Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20. The event has been changed from its usual Wednesday to Thursday night to coincide with the Rotarians’ weekly meeting. The event will take place at the Rotary Club’s new clubhouse, located right off Route 96 (first left after Meadow Mall) at 66 Montgomery Road in Boothbay Harbor.

“You’ll have an opportunity to tour our new clubhouse (which is available for events), and to meet many of our 60-plus members,” current president, Ham Meserve, said. “Our members reside in Edgecomb, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport. We gather every Thursday night for fellowship and networking, to learn about new initiatives that are underway, and to plan our many community service activities. Both men and women, including married couples, are welcome as guests or as prospective members, be it seasonally or year-round. We also are delighted to host visiting Rotarians ‘from away.’

You’ll discover that many of the tradespeople you know and deal with, and many of the people you see volunteering around town are Rotarians.

Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self.” The club raises over $50,000 annually through a series of fund-raisers and events, including the annual August Auction, our annual grade school girls basketball tournament, Soup Bowl Supper, partnering with Watershed Pottery, Rotary-Lions Charity Golf Tournament, and member sales of Florida Citrus, Vidalia Onions, and our Baskets of Lotto Tickets.

The Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club Foundation annually disburses these funds to area organizations that enrich our community or to charities that support those in need. Examples include: Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, free bikes for summer workers,

The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, Boothbay Region Community Resources Council, District Nurse, Boothbay Region High School: Interact Service Club (our “junior” Rotary Club teaching youth leadership),  Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund District Nurse, Elderly Transport (taxi vouchers for seniors), Lifeflight (helicopter medical rescue), Lincoln County Human Society, Little League and Pee Wee Football,

Local Fire Departments, Opera House, Set For Success (school supplies for all), and YMCA, among others. The Club also hosts special dinners honoring veterans, first responders, lifetime achievers, and visiting Rotarian groups and students, and provides scholarships for semesters-at-sea, foreign travel, and summer camps.

The Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club also contributes to its parent Rotary International and its global campaigns, such as its long time drive to eradicate polio worldwide. The Club contributes directly to individual countries through their local Rotary clubs, providing disaster relief. Examples include Shelter Box instant emergency housing for Nepal, Rotaplast medical clinics in West Africa and computers for women’s rescue efforts in Thailand.

The Business After Hours will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres prepared by local Chef Extraordinaire, Kim Mills, including buffalo wings, crab dip, wrapped scallops, and a number of other delicacies. Beer and wine will be provided by Oak Street Provisions.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their business cards to be entered into a drawing to win one of five fabulous door prizes.

The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours are open to members and non-members and everyone from the business community is encouraged to participate. We have several Business After Hours scheduled so far and welcome more with an average attendance of 80 people.
