Rotary gives money to Lincoln County Communications Center

The Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club donated $1,000 to the Lincoln County Communications Center to help small callers.

Daren and Debbie Graves were on hand to present a check for $1,000 to the Communications Center to help purchase a new emergency 911 simulator, which will be used by young students.

The total price of the simulator is expected to be north of $2,100, so the money will cover almost half of the cost.

The money came from the Rotary's Hometown Heroes fund, which also recently gave $500 to the Ambulance Service, and has been used in years past to buy everything from bulletproof vests to fire equipment.

The Communications Center goes to different schools throughout Lincoln County and provides the classes with stickers, activity books and crayons detailing how to use 911 in an emergency.

When the center goes to schools, it's usually Red E. Fox giving the presentations, which are also funded by the Hometown Heroes Fund.

With the way people call 911 changing, new equipment is needed, Joe Westrich, 911 supervisor said.

“(The money donated) will be used on a 911 simulator you can load with prerecorded messages,” he said. “Those messages can be changed, but it really helps us reinforce our materials.”
