Roses for valentines

On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the lucky women, and men, who got roses, chocolates, a ring, or whatever other gifts that may have been bestowed upon them by midnight, might have gotten them later than hoped. On Feb. 13, a major blizzard hit the northeast, and most people, if they were smart, stayed put in a warm house and waited it out.

Valentine’s Day morning was a time for digging through piles of snow, some in excess of two feet. Florists had to dig themselves out, too. But they persevered and helped brighten a lot of women’s, and men’s, Valentine’s Day, after the doom and gloom of the day before.

Boothbay Region Greenhouses was busy all day on Feb. 14, beginning at 8 a.m. sharp. Owner Kitty Boyd said four delivery people made their way through snowy driveways to deliver approximately 60 floral arrangements, mostly red and pink roses, a Valentine’s Day favorite. More deliveries were scheduled for the day after. “We had to call some people ahead,” she said. ”Some people hadn’t been plowed yet, so they asked us to wait. Plowing was a big issue.”

A customer who went to the floral shop in the morning, Tim Utley, saw the need for delivery people and pitched in to help. He was delivering flowers for a good part of the day. Finally, at around 4 p.m., he picked up some flowers for his wife and headed to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
