Romar correction

Tue, 10/11/2016 - 1:00pm

    Dear Editor:

Last week's story on the bowling alley contained an error. The By-Way's log bowling alley was not built in 1946, but in 1928 by O. P. Swope, a developer of Appalachee. He also gave the town land for the street called the By-Way. The alley's many doors along its front show Swope's intent to house multiple shops, which the building did for many years. After Charlie Rowe and Leslie Marr were burnt out of their Commercial Street bowling alley in the fire of 1945, they bought the By-Way building and renovated the interior into the Romar (for Rowe and Marr) bowling alley, opening in 1946.
