David and Susan Rockefeller have made a “significant contribution” to the Cuckolds Fog Signal and Light Station, according to the Cuckolds Council.

On receipt of the Rockefellers’ grant, Paul Coulombe, president of the Cuckolds Council, noted the synergies between the mission of the Cuckolds, and Rockefeller’s own nonprofit organization, Sailors for the Sea, both of which engender a great respect for the ocean, and help educate their constituencies in the fragility of the environment and individual and collective responsibility to help prevent deterioration and promote sustainability.

Sailing the Maine coast for generations, the Rockefellers came to know the Cuckolds as a beacon and mariners’ landmark in good weather and foul.

“I am a big supporter of the coast of Maine and its key conservation organizations, including the Island Institute, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, College of the Atlantic, Friends of Acadia and others,” David Rockefeller said. “I have great interest in coastal initiatives that protect our beautiful seas and islands.”

Thanking the Rockefeller for their generous gift, Cuckolds Council Vice President and spokesman, Janet Reingold noted, “We have an opportunity to deepen the collaboration with Cuckolds partners such as Bigelow Laboratories and Sailors for the Sea to support each others’ public awareness and education programs about ocean stewardship and protection. In a three-acre property surrounded by ocean, we are highly motivated to serve as great stewards of these waters, and to educate others to do the same. Likewise, we have a great relationship with Bigelow Labs, and we intend to host experiential and educational programs when construction of our education and exhibit spaces is completed.”

The Cuckolds Light Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
