Robin Spielberg, Ben Taylor and Novel Jazz at the Boothbay Harbor Opera House

Thu, 07/31/2014 - 5:00pm

Robin Spielberg, “America’s Sweetheart of Solo Piano,” will play recordings and stories from her hilarious memoir, “Naked on the Bench: My Adventures in Pianoland.” The concert is slated for Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. Boothbay Harbor Opera House doors open at 7 p.m.

Mesmerizing audiences with inspired tales, extraordinary piano technique and heartfelt performances, what is most intriguing about her is the way Spielberg wraps personal stories around her music. And most often those tales are laced with humor.

Tickets for Robin Spielberg are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show.

Ben Taylor

Musician Ben Taylor is the son of folk/rock icons James Taylor and Carly Simon. Even with those genes, he had a hard time finding his own way. But that changed when he came out with his critically acclaimed debut album, “Famous Among the Barns,” released in 2010.

On Thursday, Aug. 7, Ben Taylor comes to Boothbay Harbor to perform at the Opera House, giving the Midcoast an opportunity to listen to this soulful folk-rock heir in an intimate setting.

“Listening,” is Taylor's most recent release and first album in four years. He once described his work as “organically handcrafted songs,” and given the painstaking thought and care he puts in to his art, who can argue? “Listening,” flawlessly fuses the sounds and styles of folk, pop, soul, urban, reggae and country.

Tickets for this performance are $15 in advance and $20 if purchased on the day of the concert. Taylor goes on stage at 7:30 p.m., doors for seating open at 7 p.m.

Novel Jazz Septet

The musicians of Novel Jazz have been performing straight-ahead jazz around Maine and New England for over three decades. They draw from the Great American Songbook and specialize in the works of Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. On Friday, Aug. 8, Maine’s jazz masters come to Boothbay Harbor to perform at the Opera House.

Most recently, under the enthusiastic leadership of band member Barney Balch, Novel Jazz has embarked on a project at the Library of Congress to go through the massive archive of compositions by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, who wrote over 3,000 pieces between them, transcribing some lesser known gems for the band and reinterpreting them with a 21st century sound.

The doors for seating open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30 p.m. There will be room to dance and refreshments will be available.

Tickets for these performances are currently on sale though the Opera House box office, at 86 Townsend Avenue, open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by calling 207-633-5159. Tickets are also available online at www.boothbayoperahouse.com.
