Richard M. Bridges

Richard Martel Bridges, 84, died peacefully in his home surround by his loving family on July 30, 2014.

He was born on May 26, 1930 in Boston, Mass., to his parents Walter G. and Lucia (Saucier) Bridges. Richard graduated from Thayer Academy and received a bachelor’s degree from Boston University.

Richard served his country in the Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was employed in real estate, insurance, ship owner and owner and president of W.G. Bridges & Sons, Ins.

He enjoyed boating, sailing in Boothbay and the South Shore of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Mackenzie Boat Club in Massachusetts, and traveled the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. In his early years Richard was an avid runner and swimmer.

Richard was a member of Rotary International, where he led the relief mission of the Hingham Rotary Club after Hurricane Mitch. He coordinated the transportation of medical support and equipment, including doctors, fire engines and ambulances to Honduras and Belize via container ships and Military Air Craft. He was past president of the Hingham Rotary Club, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Weymouth Business Man’s Assoc., Weymouth Chapter of the American Red Cross, New England Moxie Congress, Matthews Museum in Union, Insurance Brokers Assoc. of Mass., Quincy and South Shore Board of Realtors. He was the recipient of Thayer Academy Alumni Humanitarian Award and Hingham Historical Society Humanitarian Award.

A summer resident of Spruce Shores since 1972, he loved and cherished everyone there. He was loved and supported by the East Boothbay community since 2006.

Richard was predeceased by a sister, Martha Bridges Degrande, and brother-in-law John Macdonald.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Bridges of East Boothbay; lifelong friend, Sandra Ingmanson of Westford, Mass.; son and family, Richard W. Bridges and wife Dana; grandchildren, Josephine and Case Bridges of West Newbury, Mass.; son, Christopher and wife Karyn of Duxbury, Mass.; brother, Robert G. Bridges of Venice, Florida; brother in-law, Frank Degrande of Guilford, Conn.; brother in-law, Daniel Macdonald and wife Marilyn of Halifax, Nova Scotia; sisters in-law, Catherine Macdonald and husband Brian of Orangedale, Nova Scotia, Annabelle Mcrae and husband Duncan of Hampton, New Brunswick, Charlotte O Donnell of Whitehorse, Yukon, and Suzanne Coffey and husband Dwight of Hampton, New Brunswick.

He is also survived by his very dear nephews, nieces and their families; Robert Silverstein and his wife, Eunice; Richard Silverstein; Nancy Ashcroft and Peter; Peter Martel Bridges and his wife Jill; Boothbay friend and special companion Wyatt Oakes; and caregivers Michelle Oakes, Teresa Bryer and Jack Allen.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
