Captain Richard “Dick” Cook died Nov. 1, 2014 at the Togus Spring Hospice and Palliative Care Unit, Togus VA Medical Center, Augusta. He was surrounded with the love of his wife and soul mate Leslie, his daughter and two grandchildren.

Dick was born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 30, 1923 to William and Hazel (Davis) Cook. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Hazel Cook, brother, W. Franklin Cook and son Richard D. Cook Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Cook, and daughter Carol Cook-Glover and her husband Kenneth Cook-Glover of Plaistow, New Hampshire. He is also survived by granddaughters Eden Cook-Glover and Crystal Giroux, both of Plaistow.

Dick graduated from the Naval Air Academy in Pensacola, Florida, joined Patrol Squadron 201 and flew PBMs during World War II. After the war he was hired by Eastern Airlines and flew with them for 37 years, earning the rank of captain. He loved flying and enjoyed learning about the aviation possibilities of progressively modern planes. He flew the Eastern Airline plane that is hanging in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Dick was a member of the Lions Club and participated in both Boothbay Harbor and Plaistow, New Hampshire. He built model boats for several years taking great joy in the end product. Summers would find Dick and Leslie sailing the coast of Maine in their sailboat “Moongate.”

Dick loved a good joke and had one for everyone he met until the very end.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Benoit for his years of caring for Dick in his medical journey, the care from the staff at St. Andrews Hospital, Lincoln County Home Health and Hospice, and EMTs.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Columba’s Episcopal, 32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
