Reponse to letters

Dear Editor:

In last week's (1/26) Register, three letters need to be addressed (or, how can we make it better?).

Joyce Sirois' take on Joyce Kilmer's poem, "Trees," is spot on. It is a disgraceful act of clear cutting of nine acres of native woodland. Does the Botanical Gardens really need nine acres of parking lot? One wonders. It was approved by your town.

The second letter was Marcia Soler's "Progress" concerning the loss of all the buildings near the Boothbay Common. It is more than a losss; it is another rape our our local history and street scape. This can not be replaced and one wonders what will be built instead. Another approval of locals. All sold out to "money talks"except a choice few who remain. I am not in favor of the loss of local-ness and the history of Boothbay.

The third letter from Karen Swartsberg deals with another loss of the Romar bowling alley, "Will buy bowling pins, balls." It is right on. Are we to accept that is all that could be left of another tradition in town? Very sad on all of us. Aren't we allowing the loss of history and paving paradise for a parking lot?

I am an active preservationist and have asked on several occasions if our historical society would be interested in giving plaques to significant historical buildings. The answer in negative response was "We really don't have time." Well, maybe it is overdue to have a historic building review board with awards for deserving owners. I have restored over eight buildings, in Maine and New Jersey.
