Re: Powder Hill Memorial

Dear Editor:

In response to the letter concerning the status of the plaque placed near Powder Hill by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1941 (shortly before Pearl Harbor Day), the plaque reads:

"Sons of this town let this of you be said, that you who are living are worthy of your dead."

To me this does not mean veterans and their organizations alone should be responsible for tidying up around the site, but that all residents who want to show thanks to those veterans should share that responsibility.

The American Legion makes a point of cleaning up around it before each Memorial Day Parade, and putting a fresh flag there as needed. Individuals tidy it up as they notice the need. Wouldn't it be nice if the DAR and all observers did the same?

(The last time I drove by, it looked fine — no bottles or trash, relatively good visibility of the plaque.)
