Rain turns to snow

While it's too far out to predict a white Christmas, the week leading up to it will be gray, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, a low-pressure system off the coast and remnants of a Great Lakes storm pelted the Midcoast, including Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor, with heavy rain.

That rain has a good chance to turn into snow, meteorologist Chris Legro with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine said, but it won't accumulate much.

“It looks like (the rain will turn to snow) in your area sometime after midnight,” he said. “But I wouldn't expect there to be any significant accumulation.”

Legro said the snow would likely give way to rain by morning, and that the rain wouldn't likely let up until Thursday, Dec. 18 in the afternoon. Northwesterly winds are expected to gust around 25 miles and hour.

“Unfortunately, it looks like it will keep raining into (Thursday),” he said. “Any chance beyond that (for snow) will be this Sunday, and that's likely to be a mixed bag as well.”

That mixed bag will likely include rain, slush and maybe a few snowflakes thrown in, Legro said.
