A quest for laughs

Monty Python's “Spamalot” opens June 27 at the Boothbay Playhouse

Thou needst not adhere to the cult of Monty Python to get a kick out of “Spamalot,” the Arthurian musical spoof that will run amok at the Boothbay Playhouse June 27 through July 13.

Lovingly ripped off from the comedy film classic, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Spamalot” follows the exploits of Arthur, King of the Britons as he goes forth and attempts to find chivalry and valiant knights.

Instead he gets an ill-assorted band that includes The Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls, Sir Galahad the Pure, Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir Lancelot. The mock medieval knights carry dull swords, but their wit is razor sharp and knows no mercy.

The play pokes fun at almost everyone and everything, from venerable legends such as King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable, to God, Broadway musicals and the Black Plague. From fairytales to fairies, all take some ribbing.

During his quest for the Holy Grail, Arthur is confronted by rude Frenchmen, killer rabbits, The Knights Who Say Ni, Tim the Enchanter, the Black Knight and many other favorite Python characters.

Eric Idle, one of the original Monty Python sketch comedy crew, wrote the script and co-wrote the music. Many of the best-loved lines and naughty bits from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” are captured onstage and surrounded by hilarious song and dance lampoons, tap dances, soft shoes, high-kicking Las Vegas showgirls and the Fisch Schlapping Finns (who start the show in colorful lunacy because they thought the narrator said “Finland” instead of “Britain.”)

Lauded as “the musical for people that don't like musicals,” “Spamalot” was the winner of three 2005 Tony Awards including Best Musical and takes British humor to a new level of wit and hilarity.

“Spamalot” is rated PG-13. Tickets are $23 for adults, $19 for children 17 years old or younger and can be purchased at the Boothbay Playhouse box office or by calling 207-633-3379.
