The proposed new path: A perspective

Fri, 07/11/2014 - 5:00pm

    Dear Editor:

OK. Let's start by saying that I realize I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. But, please consider the following scenario:

It's a busy summer day. There is a flea market at the Center Common, a golf tournament is being prepped at the new Boothbay Harbor Country Club. Lady Elizabeth is slayin’ ’em at Bet's — traffic coming south on Route 27 is all but bumper to bumper and traffic going north on Route 27 is regular and determined.

The Botanical Gardens is hosting an All NE Fairy festival, Subway and the Gulf station are packed to overflowing, and Back River Road is fairly quiet except for Matthew Eldridge who's trying to get home in time for a "Seinfeld" rerun — he's anxious.

There's an accident on Route 27 on the Meadow, requiring both an ambulance and a fire truck (they go together these days) to launch simultaneously, Cub Scout Den 2370 is marching up the new path along Route 27 trying to cross at about the town office, heading to Mr. Clifford's Park for a weenie roast and camporee on the ball field, and, last but not least, there's a substantial gathering at the funeral home finishing up and heading for McSeagull's.

    It could happen.

Oh, and I forgot — there's a wedding at the Baptist Church.

Are we creating an even more difficult situation?
