Another sports hall of fame is opening its doors to a local basketball coach. Boothbay boys basketball coach I.J. Pinkham was inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, and this month, he becomes a member of the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame.

Pinkham was nominated by local realtor and basketball official Clayton Pottle. Pinkham will join Rick Bresnahan, Jim Graffam, Travis Magnusson, Ed Mazurek, Troy Withee and Sue Wootton in the MC Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017. Along with the individuals, the MC Hall is also inducting Waldoboro High School’s girls’ basketball teams of 1958, 1959 and 1960.

Pinkham didn’t speak when he was inducted into the fourth class of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, but he will as an MC Hall of Fame member.

“I’m going to thank all the people who helped me along the way: my players, coaches, administrators, family and the community,” said Pinkham, 70, who began his coaching career in 1970 at Buckfield High School.

Pinkham began coaching in his second year as a Buckfield High teacher in 1970. He spent five years coaching the Bucks before moving in 1976 to Boothbay Region High School. His teams are known for playing a fast-tempo style and being perennial tourney contenders. Pinkham’s teams have won 615 games during his tenures in Boothbay and Buckfield.

The ceremony is Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Rockland Elks Club. The festivities include a social hour at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. This is the 11th class of the MC Sports Hall of Fame located in Waldoboro.
