Penguin Plunge

Wed, 01/07/2015 - 11:00am

    Dear Editor:
On Jan. 1, 2015, the BRYMCA held the 13th annual Penguin Plunge. The Penguin Plunge is a fundraiser to support the Y’s second grade Learn to Swim Program. The Edgecomb Eddy School and Boothbay Region Elementary School participate in the Learn to Swim Program. This year’s plunge was held in recognition of Sue Burge, a phenomenal community leader and volunteer. She is responsible for Set for Success, which is held in the Y’s Field House at the end of the summer and focuses on ensuring that children from Edgecomb to Southport have proper school supplies.
This year 25 registered plungers braved the cold Atlantic Ocean at the Murray Hill boat launch. Registrations, donations and sponsorships totaled just over $1,500.
Co-directors Larry Brown, Shane Pennington and the 2015 Penguin Plunge Committee would like to thank the individuals and groups listed below in no particular order:

    1. Volunteer and staff committee members who coordinated and organized the event to ensure success.
    2. The hearty plungers, sponsors and those who made donations.
    3. The Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Region Ambulance and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.
    4. Boothbay Region Cable TV and Jonne Trees for an excellent job capturing the plunge so everyone may enjoy it again and again.
    5. Boothbay Public Work employees who sanded the boat launch at Murray Hill.
    6. Harbor Embroidery for the embroidery on the Plunge shirts at a reasonable price.
    7. Adept for supplying the long sleeved T-shirts at a reasonable price.
    8. Knickerbocker Group for being a key sponsor of the Plunge for the past 13 years.
    9. Sue Burge for her leadership in our community and her support for this year’s plunge.

Hope to see you at next year’s plunge.
    Shane Pennington and Larry Brown
