Pemaquid Chapter DAR holds meeting

Marine honored and talk given on Ellis Island
Fri, 10/09/2015 - 1:00pm

The Sept. 8 meeting of the Pemaquid Chapter was held at the Lincoln Home library in Newcastle. Regent Louise Brown welcomed the members and together opened the meeting with the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag and the American’s creed and preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America.

The President General’s message was given by Patricia Viles, as well as the National Defense report.

Viles was privileged to go to a special birthday party for U.S. Marine Corps Major (Ret.) Henry “Bud” Wildfang, a 99-year-old veteran pilot in Texas. The NSDAR supported him, with many chapters sending birthday greetings to him. Major Wildfang was a 3-year holder of the Silver Hawk award, a designation for senior Marine Corps aviators on active duty. He served in World War II and did two tours in Vietnam. He received the distinguished Flying Cross with four gold stars, a Purple Heart and 29 air medals. Major Wildfang died two weeks after his 99th birthday.

There was no secretary's report. The treasurer's report was given by Jeannie Hoyenski. Committee reports were given on the Constitution minutes and American History by Regent Louise Brown. Brown gave some interesting facts about her relatives from Italy, who came through Ellis Island in the late 1800s. She also discussed the early days of Ellis Island and some interesting interviews with immigrants from Italy, Ireland and Greece.

The meeting ended with a social hour. We meet every second Tuesday of every month except January-April. In May and December, we meet the second Saturday of the month. All are welcome to our meetings, bring a bag lunch and join us. For more information, call Louise Brown, 207-623-8790 or Miriam Buckley, 207-563-3949. The next meeting will be held Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Home in Newcastle; after a brief meeting and lunch, we will proceed to the DAR designated, Historic Harrington Meeting House in Pemaquid.
