Pancakes, pirates and programs kick off Windjammer Tuesday

Tue, 06/27/2017 - 11:45am

A pancake breakfast, the raising of information banners and the assembling of pirate paraphernalia kicked off morning Windjammer Days activities in the Whale Park on Tuesday, June 27.

Members of the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department got up before the sun to cook a breakfast to benefit the department and the Windjammer Days Committee.

Snowbirders, annual visitors and first-timers from near and far came to partake in the breakfast which featured eggs, bacon, pancakes, muffins and hash browns cooked by the firefighters.

Capt. Crudbeard and his pirate crew began setting up tents and unloading pirate gear for demonstrations to take place later in the day.

Crudbeard said the pirate ship Must Roos would not be making the trip due to problems with navigation equipment. The boat, built in North Carolina and trucked to Maine in 2005, is scheduled to sail as far as Stonington for a pirate rendezvous later this summer. The crew planned to hold a pirate puppet show and arms demonstrations later in the day, said Crudbeard.

The Friends of Windjammer Days set up an information tent complete with T-shirts, souvenirs, information flyers and light refreshments.

Kris Ward instructed volunteers Dana Cabrera and Peter Li on how to inform people about the silent auction table which will feature hourly drawings for locally donated items.
