Ocean Point Column: Meeting neighbors on a fine spring day

Thu, 04/16/2015 - 10:00am

Spring-like weather finally arrived last weekend, which prompted us to make our first trip of the season to Ocean Point. And we were not disappointed; the weather, especially Sunday, was beautiful.

As we made our way north we encountered several surprises along the way; the Kennebec River had chunks of ice and snow along its banks; and, as we made our way into Boothbay, we noticed that Adams Pond was still iced over.

Approaching the Boothbay Common, our attention was immediately drawn to the new entrance of Boothbay Harbor Country Club, currently under construction; the stonework is quite impressive. Although not due to be completed until June, Hannaford has made some incredible improvements and it was nice to browse the aisles to see all of the work that has taken place in our absence.

Despite a longer than usual season, Ocean Point remains as beautiful as ever, surviving the harsh winter elements. It was certainly great to be able to walk along Shore Road and enjoy the beauty and sunshine of the day. There is new construction and several renovations of cottages taking place, as is the construction of the new cell tower. There are piles of snow scattered here and there especially in wooded areas and the Duck Pond is partially frozen.

It was nice to catch up with several Ocean Pointers: Bob and Pat Landurand, Mary and Ted Fuller, Cilla Alden and her family, and Elise Wyman, also Jim and Doreen Dun, Dave and Pat McHold and Marilyn Heise. Marilyn is here putting the finishing touches on their new home to be completed soon.

Marilyn and Jim Steane’s daughter, Jennifer, and son in-law, Dave, will be appearing on HGTV’s “House Hunters” airing May 5 at 10 p.m. Eastern. Be sure to watch.

Early last fall, Connie Saindon published her book, “Murder Survivors Handbook.” The Independent Book Publishers Association has just honored Connie’s book with the Benjamin Franklin Gold Award. Connie’s book had previously received the silver award and was judged best book in the self-help category. Congratulations, Connie, for being honored with such a prestigious award.

Late last fall Connie published her second book of Ocean Point photographs.

As the spring season moves forward, I’m sure many will be anxious to return. Just a reminder to check the Water District website for updates on seasonal water.

Have a great week and enjoy the milder temperatures.
