Ocean Point Column: Holiday weekend visitors

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 7:00am

There were many Ocean Pointers here enjoying the Labor Day weekend, and we were fortunate enough that the weather did cooperate for a good part of the time.

Karen (Goodrich) Wales and her husband Stu were here with their children Hadley, Lucy, Stephen and Annie enjoying the annual Goodrich Labor Day festivities.

Rich and Stephanie Slayton are here with their family enjoying some vacation time together. Tom, Alexa and their children Brendan and John were here as well.

It was so nice to see Blake and Ivy Cass who were here vacationing with Paul and Helene.

This was certainly the year for Ocean Point weddings. Stacy Theriault, and John “Jeds” Nickerson IV were married in a civil ceremony in Loch Lomond, Scotland on June 25. Stacy is the daughter of Alex and Jim Theriault of Belgrade, Maine and the granddaughter of Kitty and Jim Anagnost of River Vale, New Jersey, and Ocean Point. A blessing of the civil ceremony was held on Aug. 23 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville followed by a reception for family members and friends. Congratulations to the bride and groom.

The ice bucket challenge has been extremely popular this summer and Dianne Eakin reports that both her daughter Debi and her nephew Robbie took on that challenge, Debi in Massachusetts and Rob here while visiting Ocean Point.

On a sad note, Margaret “Peggy” Flynt Haskell died recently, our condolences to Pat Waldman and Betsy Klein on the loss of their beloved sister.

A celebration of the life of Lisa Carey Perry, daughter of Durwood “Moe” Carey was held on Aug. 23 at the Wilson Chapel with many family and friends in attendance.

Lisa passed away on May 21 and sadly her brother Craig died shortly after on July 2.

Following the service both Lisa and Craig’s ashes were scattered at sea; everyone gathered at the Casino to enjoy lunch and fond memories. Lisa and Craig’s cousin Alice Hartwell reports that it was a “perfect Ocean Point day” and while sad it was also a joyful day as they celebrated the circle of life at their beloved Ocean Point.

I want to once again express my gratitude to all of you who assisted in making a great summer of activities here at the Point. Thank you to all who chaired an activity and to all the volunteers. I certainly appreciated all of your effort.

I do hope that if you are now home after the long weekend that your trip was a safe one and that you will be returning to Ocean Point soon. If you are fortunate enough to be staying there is still plenty of time to enjoy a drink, dinner or both at the Inn, as they will remain open until Columbus Day. Also please support the local businesses, and don’t forget the Food Pantry.

    Have a great week.
