Ocean Point: Boston on our minds

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 11:00am

There are finally signs of spring appearing all around: Our daffodils are beginning to show growth, the days are getting warmer and the daylight hours are longer.

One sure sign of spring is the return of baseball, and here in New England, our World Series Champion Boston Red Sox team. Many of us Ocean Pointers will be cheering on our team as the season unfolds with the hopes of another championship this year.

Jean and John Webster welcomed in spring by recently attending the Red Sox Minor League affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs vs. the Rock Cats. Jean reports it was a great spring day with lots of people in attendance. They thoroughly enjoyed watching the Sea Dogs beat the Rock Cats and in addition to a great game she and John enjoyed all of the delicious treats that the ballpark has to offer.

Another sure sign of spring is the Boston Marathon; this year will be the 118th running of the marathon and will be held on Monday, April 21. Who could ever forget the tragedy of last year’s event especially if you were a participant, a spectator at the finish line or an official?

Many of my family members were there at the finish line when the bombs went off that day. My brothers Tom, Michael and Peter are all track officials and have worked the marathon for many years. Tom is actually the official in charge of the finish line and both Michael and Peter are officials at the start and the finish.

Peter’s children Katy, Peter and Chrissy were all participants and were there as well, The tragedy, carnage and pain that they witnessed has not deterred them at all as Tom, Michael and Peter will once again officiate the start and finish.

Katy, Peter Jr. and Chrissy have trained long and hard this winter and will run again raising money for their various charities. Joining them this year will be Katy’s fiancé, Bryan DiMare, a first time runner. Best of luck to you all, you are truly “Boston Strong.” I’m sure that there are runners from the Boothbay area and so we wish you best of luck and will be cheering you on as well. For those of you who wish to view the Boston Marathon, the Universal Sports Network will be carrying live coverage.

The Boothbay Water District is making steady progress in getting the seasonal water turned on, check their website for details. This is such good news for those of us Ocean Pointers who are anxious to return.

Happy Easter and have a great week!
