Boothbay Harbor Sewer District Superintendent Chris Higgins announced paving for the Union Street project will happen Wednesday, May 9 through Friday, May 11. After speaking with environmental engineering firm Wright Pierce and contractor Sargent Corporation, it was decided that Hagar Enterprises Inc. would be brought in for the three-day project.

Paving will begin at the intersection of Gilead and Union streets traveling west on Union Street to Oak Street. Paving work will travel from Oak Street to just beyond Smith Street.

“In addition, we will be in the road rebuilding four manholes within the paving area,” said Higgins. “Be advised there will be traffic routing and detours while paving is underway.”

In a public notice issued by the district, it states: all east side traffic will be detoured via Eastern Avenue, Kenney Field Drive, or School Street (northbound only) while paving Union Street (Pump Station site to Oak Street). Once paving is completed past Pear Street/Union Street, regular east side traffic patterns will resume. Two-way traffic will occur on Townsend Avenue while the crew is paving Oak Street. There may be traffic delays while the crew is paving across Townsend Avenue.

During the time of two-way traffic on Townsend Avenue as the crew begins work on Oak Street, there will be no parking on Townsend Avenue for the duration of the traffic pattern change.

Said Higgins, “I suspect there will be crews in the road for at least two days, with paving taking place in one day barring any breakdown of equipment.”
