Near tragedy

Tue, 12/02/2014 - 2:30pm

    Dear Editor:

On Monday, Dec. 1, my daughter in-law walked to Hannaford with my 2-year-old grandson in his stroller.

As she attempted to cross the street, a 17-year-old driver failed to yield and struck the stroller. Thank heaven the toddler suffered only bruises but it could have been a tragedy. The driver stopped briefly and gave his name. My daughter in-law sent the driver on his way because she wanted to get my grandson to the hospital as soon as possible.

I do not know whether this driver has been cited by police, but he should be. Even if it were not a law that drivers yield to pedestrians on crosswalks, common courtesy would dictate that a woman with a stroller should be allowed to cross the street.

I hope the police will reinforce driving laws to this young man and I hope that in future this young man is more alert and responsible in his actions. That crosswalk, by the way, is dangerous for pedestrians.
