The Harbor Theatre will begin presenting musicals and operas on the first Wednesday of each month beginning in July.

In addition to offering first run movies preceded by classic cartoons or featurettes, theater owner Jason Sheckley is spicing things up with these mid-week special event performances. Audiences have two opportunities to see these offerings: at 2 and 7 p.m.

The lineup for 2015 includes:

  • July 1: “Showboat,” the San Francisco Opera in June of 2014
  • Aug. 5: “Il Trovatore,” the Berlin State Opera
  • Sept. 2: The Three Tenors concert
  • Oct. 7: “Aida”
  • Nov. 4: “Der Fliegende Hollander”
  • Dec. 2: The Vienna State Ballet’s “Nutcracker”

Already booked for 2016 are “Carmen” on Jan. 6 and “Der Rosenkavalier” on Feb. 3.

Sheckley said he has always been interested in bringing opera to Boothbay audiences.

“I had an opportunity to work with this particular distribution company and decided to test the waters,” said Sheckley. “Over the last 14 years I’ve tried to do as much as I can to create a theater the community can cherish. We’ll see how this goes!”
